2025 Survey: October 10 - 31
The biennial Stage Manager Survey is a volunteer study seeking a better understanding of stage managers, their production practices, working conditions, and education/training. This survey is open to anyone who has served in a stage management role on at least three live audience (circus, dance, music, opera, theatre, festivals, industrials, etc.) productions.
Check back in February 2026 for the results of the 2025 survey.

Previous editions of the survey were limited to the United States, but the 2021 Survey was open to people working in stage management anywhere in the world. Stage managers from 26 countries, including the US, participated in the 2021 study. Responses to some questions are grouped by country, but if there are fewer than 20 responses from any specific country, those responses will be included in a multinational group to preserve the anonymity of individual participants.
All survey reports are available for free download under a Creative Commons license so that they may be shared freely for non-commercial use. Please send others to this website to download the file rather than share the file directly in order to better track the number of viewers.

We are very grateful to the Foundation for Stage Managers for providing support towards hiring stage management translators for the 2025 edition of the Stage Manager Survey. Consider all of the stage management terminology that differs from the common meanings of words. We need a team of stage managers working in multiple languages to translate not just the words but also the practices. By offering the survey in multiple languages with the help of the Foundation for Stage Managers, more voices are heard and everyone benefits from a broader understanding of our field.
